Car Lift for a Low Ceiling Home Garage: What Fits at 2.3m, 2.7m and 3m

Car Lift for a Low Ceiling Home Garage: What Fits at 2.3m, 2.7m and 3m

Short answer: take the height to your lowest beam, light or open door, subtract the roof height of your car and a 100mm safety gap. What is left is how high you can lift. Under about 1,000mm, choose a mid rise scissor lift such as the 2700kg Portable (£1,450 delivered) or the 3000kg Platform (£1,800). Between 1,000mm and 1,900mm, the Short/Narrow 3500kg 2 Post Lift (£1,700) or a 2 post lift used below full height. With 1,900mm or more, roughly a 3.45 metre ceiling for an average car, every one of our full height lifts fits, including the 6 Ton floor plate.

The one sum that decides it

Usable lift height = ceiling height at the lowest point, minus the roof height of your tallest car, minus 100mm.

Most UK hatchbacks and saloons stand around 1.40 to 1.50 metres tall. Estates on roof rails and small SUVs are often 1.60 to 1.70 metres, large SUVs and vans more. Measure your own car rather than guessing: a few centimetres make a real difference in a low garage.

We explain how to measure the ceiling properly, including beams, lights and doors, in garage ceiling height for a car lift. This guide starts where that one ends: you have the number, now which lift do you buy?

What fits at each ceiling height

Worked out for a car 1.45 metres tall. If your car is taller, take the difference off the usable height.

Ceiling at lowest point Usable lift height What fits
2.3m about 750mm Mid rise scissor used part way up, or a trolley jack and axle stands
2.5m about 950mm Mid rise scissor at close to its full height
2.7m about 1,150mm Any mid rise; a short 2 post lift for wheels-off work at reduced height
3.0m about 1,450mm Short/Narrow 2 post lift; a standard 2 post with the top limit set; work crouching
3.2m about 1,650mm Any of our 2 post lifts at reduced height
3.45m and above 1,900mm Full height on our 1,900mm 2 post lifts, standing room under the car

One more check matters in a low garage: the lift itself must fit under the ceiling, not just the car. The posts of a 2 post lift are taller than its lifting height, and a clear floor lift also has a beam across the top. Post heights are in the manual of each model, or send us your ceiling height and we will check it for you.

Below 2.5 metres: mid rise scissor territory

With less than a metre of usable height, a post lift would hardly get the wheels off the ground before the roof stops it. A mid rise scissor lift is built for exactly this range. It lifts the car around one metre, wheels free, which is the right height for tyres, brakes, suspension and sills.

Below about 2.3 metres even a mid rise will only go part way up with a normal car on it. For occasional jobs a 3000kg low profile trolley jack at £139 with a pair of axle stands is still the honest answer. Our mid rise scissor lift guide compares all three mid rise models in detail.

2.5 to 3.0 metres: the awkward middle

This is where most British single garages sit, and where people make the most expensive mistakes. A mid rise works fully, but you cannot stand under the car. A 2 post lift will fit in some garages, but you will only lift the car 1,000 to 1,400mm, so you work kneeling, crouching or on a creeper seat.

Ask yourself what the lift is for:

  • Tyres, brakes, suspension, detailing: a mid rise scissor lift does all of it, costs less and leaves the garage clear when lowered.
  • Exhaust, gearbox and underbody work as well: the Short/Narrow 3500kg 2 Post Lift, made for low ceilings, at £1,700 delivered or £2,000 installed. It lifts any car or van up to 3,500kg. Even at reduced height, open access under the whole car beats lying on a creeper.

Check the post height in the Short/Narrow manual against your ceiling before you order, or send us the measurement.

3.0 to 3.45 metres: a 2 post lift used below full height

Now a 2 post lift makes sense for most people. You will not get full standing height with a normal car, but 1,450 to 1,650mm under the sills is enough to work on a stool or slightly stooped.

  • Short/Narrow 3500kg: still the best fit if the posts of a standard lift are too tall for the roof.
  • 5000kg 2 Post Lift: it has an adjustable top limit that stops the vehicle hitting the ceiling. In a garage where the roof is the limit, that is a useful safeguard against a moment's inattention.
  • 6 Ton 2 Post Lift: a floor plate, chain-drive lift, so there is no beam across the top. The posts set the height limit, not an overhead bar. It lifts 6,000kg to 1,900mm, £2,800 delivered or £3,400 installed.

Why the floor plate layout matters in a low garage is explained in floor plate vs overhead 2 post lift.

3.45 metres and above: no compromise

With 1,900mm of usable height you can raise a normal car fully on our 1,900mm lifts and stand underneath it. All five 2 post lifts are open to you, and with a bit more height the 4000kg 4 Post Lift (1,850mm) can even park a second car underneath. At this point choose by capacity and features, not by ceiling.

Six ways to gain height in a low garage

  1. Change the door. An up-and-over door hangs into the garage when it is open, often 200 to 300mm below the ceiling. A roller door that coils above the opening frees that space.
  2. Move the lights. A strip light hanging on chains can be the lowest point in the garage. Fit flat LED panels or move them to the side walls.
  3. Put the lift where the roof is highest. In a pitched roof garage, set the lift under the ridge, not near the eaves. Check between joists and beams too.
  4. Lift the lowest car. If you own two cars, work on the lower one at home and take the SUV elsewhere for the big jobs.
  5. Do not raise fully. Every lift can stop at any height. Set your own limit and mark it on the post.
  6. Sit, do not stand. A wheeled creeper seat turns 1,200mm of clearance into a comfortable working height for most jobs.

What to send us before you order

  • Ceiling height at the lowest point where the lift would stand, and with the door open
  • Floor length and width, and where the door and any steps are
  • The floor: concrete or not, any cracks, joints or old pits, and a photo
  • Make and model of the cars or vans you want to lift
  • What jobs you want to do: tyres and brakes only, or exhausts and gearboxes too

You can also run the numbers yourself with the car lift garage fit calculator.

Questions and answers

What is the best car lift for a low ceiling garage?

Under about 2.5 metres, a mid rise scissor lift such as our 2700kg Portable (£1,450). From about 2.8 metres, the Short/Narrow 3500kg 2 Post Lift (£1,700), which was made for low ceilings.

Can I fit a 2 post lift in a garage with a 2.7m ceiling?

Sometimes, but with a 1.45 metre car you would only lift about 1,150mm before the roof stops you, and the posts must also fit. For that height a mid rise scissor lift is usually the better buy.

How much ceiling height do I need for a car lift?

Lift height plus the car's roof height plus 100mm. About 2.6 metres for a mid rise scissor lift and about 3.45 metres for full height on a 1,900mm 2 post lift with an average car.

Does a floor plate 2 post lift need less height?

It has no beam across the top, so only the post height and the raised car limit you. Our 6 Ton 2 Post Lift is a floor plate design. Check its post height in the manual or ask us.

Can I use a car lift without raising it all the way?

Yes. Any of our lifts can stop at a lower height. In a low garage set your own limit, and on the 5000kg 2 Post Lift you can adjust the top limit.
