Important Points to Consider When Buying a Car Lift

If you know exactly which lift you want, you can skip this. If this is your first lift, here are the points to check before you buy.

1. Garage dimensions

Measure the ceiling height, the width and the length of the bay. You need room for the car at full lift height and room to walk and work around the lift. For low ceilings look at the Short 3500kg 2 Post Lift or a mid rise scissor lift.

2. Weight capacity

Check the kerb weight of the heaviest vehicle you will lift and choose a lift with a clear margin above it. Most cars fit a 3.5 to 4 tonne lift. Large SUVs and vans need a 5 tonne or 6 tonne 2 post lift.

3. Symmetric or asymmetric

On a symmetric 2 post lift the car sits centred between the posts, which suits vans and heavier vehicles. On an asymmetric lift the car sits further back, so the doors open more easily. The weight and type of vehicles you lift decide which suits you.

4. Concrete floor

The concrete needs a compression strength of at least 3,000 PSI and a minimum thickness of 5 inches, giving a minimum anchor embedment of 3-1/4 inches for the smaller lifts. If you are not sure about your floor, send us a photo and we will advise.

5. Lift accessories

Think about what else you need: a jacking beam or rolling jack for wheels-free work on a 4 post lift, extra pads or adaptors for your vehicles.
